Business Meeting Week!

Jim Gilman will be at Friendship Manor until his surgery on October 13th.  All are welcome to send him a text or call and say hi.  He would love to hear from you.

Business Meeting September 14, 2026

Marcy reported the Partners in Wine sponsorship total is $12,450.  The most in the history of the event.  Ticket sales are not great but every year they sell the most in the last couple of weeks before the event.  Her office staff and committee members are working hard to finalize the details.

The project at Martha's House is progressing.  Window trim repairs are complete, pocket doors now work, a back door hinge was fixed, and back gate latch installed.  The next purchase will be plywood for the bookshelves.  Wayne and his crew are doing great.  Thank you to all who have assisted.

October 24th 10am is the World's Largest Polio Walk.  The starting point is Vibrant Arena at the Mark.  Free tickets can be secured at https://tinyurl.com/PolioWalkQCA.  They will be looking for  volunteers to serve various functions the day of the event.  Please let Bill know, so he can relay your information to the planning committee.  There is a cost of $800 to use the arena facilities.  They have asked each local club to contribute $100.  George McDoniel made a motion to approve $100 to be donated to the event and Marcy O'Brien seconded.  We had unanimous approval.

The Moline Parks and Rec Department is looking for support of the Rockin' the River event.  There is a cost for a 10 x 10 tent.  Sue Cassatt made a motion to approve a $200 sponsorship to support the event.  Christie Coverdill seconded.  Unanimous approval.

We had discussion about the quarterly grants.  We are still in the first quarter of the Rotary year.  Our annual budget of $1,600 translates to $400 per quarter.  We had two requests.  One from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Mississippi Valley received in July for $500 intended for an event that occurred in August.  Another for $500 from Hope at the Brick House received September 8th, requesting support for a staffer and potential student participants experiencing blindness. Braille books, cards, blocks, games, measuring spoons and cups would be purchased. John made a motion to approve $400 for each grant beneficiary, amended to $200 for each beneficiary.    George seconded the motion. We had some discussion about meeting our budget and assumption of additional grant requests this year.  We agreed to revisit these requests if remaining dollars are available later in the year.  Motion approved unanimously as amended.

Bingo at Hope Creek is this Sunday.  Volunteers are set.  All are welcome to enjoy the fun.

Andy has secured our reading Fridays at the Rock Island Math and Science Academy.  John Finkes volunteered to read on October 23rd.  November 20th and December 11th are available.

We encourage Rotarians to bring friends to events like Rockin' the River and Partners in Wine.  Tickets are available for Partner's in Wine.  These fun events can be a great way to introduce a potential Rotarian to our awesome club.  We are always looking to expand the club.  Membership is key to our survival.  Who do you know that believes in service to others?

Happy Dollars of the Week

Andy had a grading frenzy so could not help with Labor Day flag distribution.  Sad dollar…

Terry is happy about the Iowa win and the Women's USA basketball team winning the world cup.

Wayne got his grass cut despite the threat of rain.  Sadly, Diana's father passed over the weekend in St. Louis.  The family is working on arrangements.

Christie was able to get out on the river over the weekend.  She traveled to a new spot and enjoyed it.

John had his 86th year birthday party at Olive Garden.  He was happy about the Missouri win and his granddaughter got fur babies.

Bill had a wonderful vacation in Hayward.  The food was great.  They need rain badly.  Drought maps show them in red.

Sue had a happy/sad dollar.  Her cat, Bella, is unable to walk.  It's unclear if she had a stroke or a severe inner ear infection.  Thankfully, the vet approved a round of antibiotics.  She's elderly so options are limited.

George, the caller, was happy to call B-9! He had a skin patch removed and on the mend.  His doctor ordered limited activity to prevent the possibility of metastasizing.

It's time to sell raffle tickets to support our District Grant Matching funds.

5 tickets $20

1 ticket $5

Marcy O'Brien has our raffle tickets.  Please make arrangements to acquire tickets if you weren't at this week's meeting.

The Meeting next week, September 21st, will be at Harold's Landing in Moline. Bring a chair and a friend.   Plan on arriving about 5:30 pm.  We'll be doing box lunches.  Please let Randy and Bill know if you will attend so we have enough meals.  There will also be food trucks present.  Music is 6-7:30 pm.

Partners in Wine Tasting

Please email Marcy if you intend to volunteer that evening.

Our collaboration with the Rock Island Child Advocacy Center, will be September 24th.  Please pencil that into your calendar.  Arrive approximately 5 pm.  It will be at the Old Oaks Winery 10814 1st S W. Milan.  Rotary will be assisting with registration and busing tables. This is our second largest fundraiser of the year.  Your participation is appreciated.

Boys and Girls Club Job Interview Readiness training - September 28th 4-5 pm.  There will not be a regular meeting that day.  Please submit material you would like to include in the presentation to Sue at scassatt69@ymail.com.  Planning is still in process.  We hope to have Rotarians at stations covering basic topics such as interview skills, presentation, proper attire, and resume preparation. We have not been given much time so material will need to be straight forward.  We are expecting approximately 6 students. Sue has secured coupons from Dress for Success to reward female participants for their participation.  Clothing for males is still pending.

Please email Sue Cassatt to confirm your attendance at the event so she includes you in the presentation.

Reading Day Math and Science Academy     Contact Andy Axup if you want to be a reader.  This Friday Andy is reading.  John has accepted October 23rd. November 20th and December 11th are open.  Reading begins at 2 and ends at 2:45.
